All this talk about the PlayStation Move is really starting to annoy me. Yes, the controller looks like the WiiMote, but lets stop kidding outselves into thinking that this is the first time that the video game industry has moved forward on the shoulders of the existing ideas. Nintendo has been the innovator since they entered the market, and we have them to thank for everything from the D-Pad to the Thumbstick to Wireless Controllers.
THE D-PAD: NES vs Sega Master System

How the HECK do you win?
The theme is ‘Spring Sundress’. I’ve mimiced the winner’s outfit for colour, brands, and every other possible combination I can think of. I’ve even worn the same outfit that the winner picks every time. Nothing works.
Has anyone beat it? How did you do it???

The Nintendo Game Boy—the most popular video game console of all time—was born today, April 21, back in 1989. Here are its 20 years of history in a timeline that actually goes back to 1889.

Apple’s over-sized iPad will be hitting stores in the U.S. on Saturday, April 3 for WiFi models and later that month for WiFi plus 3G models. All models of the iPad will be available in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK in late April.
Pre-orders for U.S. orders of the $499 iPad open up a week from today at both the Apple online and bricks and mortar store.
That’s around the same time you can pick up a DSi XL, if you’re into oversized things. The DSi XL goes on sale on March 28 for 189.99.

No, it’s not a new Wonderswan, it’s the ODROID. This curious little gaming handheld has a 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen, Android 1.5 OS, 512MB of RAM, and the same 833MHz Samsung CPU as the iPhone 3GS.
A developer version is now up for pre-order, and includes a charger cable, serial console debugging board, and batteries. It costs the equivalent of about $320, and should be delivered by November 5—ahead of standard $250 models arriving sometime in December.
The device has 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a mini-HDMI port to connect it to your TV. There’s no 3G, though there’s a chance you could use ..read the full article
Last month the worldwide effort to thwart the illegal copying and sales of videogames took a turn to the draconian, with a number of publishers introducing new measures that often seemed to impact legitimate gamers as much as pirates.
France-based Ubisoft rolled out a new form of digital rights management that require players of their PC video games to stay online at all times to play. Japan-based Sony tested out a new system that would require people purchasing one of their Playstation Portable video games used to pay an extra $20 to play online. And Nintendo, taking a page from ..read the full article
Is there an easy way to find out about new and upcoming DS releases? I used to use IGN’s DS review page, but they apparently decided it wasn’t annoying enough, so they made it useless.

The benefits of the Wii and exergaming to patients in hospitals and elder-care facilities has been discussed nearly since the console’s release. Researchers in San Diego now say that Wii video games can combat the onset of depression in elderly persons.
A pilot study involving 19 subjects with subsyndromal depression – not full blown depression, but much more common, and more associated with functional disability and long-term hospitaliztion – found that participating in Wii video games assisted with their symptoms. This is important because, while longer-term studies have shown that physical activity can abate one’s depression, fewer than five percent of ..read the full article

Not a Mii thing, but still a fun video from the Side Mission. Well, I think so, anyway, but then I’m probably biased because I made it.
Travis Touchdown swings his sword, slicing cleanly through his attacker’s neck. Blood gushes like a red geyser as the head hurtles straight up into the air then lands back on the neck before the body can fall. That head lands so neatly, in fact, that it opens its mouth and starts threatening Travis.
In the action video game No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle, this is how the world works.

There is a new Holy Grail of Rare videogames, and it is Stadium Events. The auction on a factory-sealed NTSC version closed just minutes ago, and it was sold for $41,300, almost double the old record.
3 days into the bidding the high offer had already eclipsed the record price ever paid for a rare video game – $20,100 for a Nintendo Campus Challenge cartridge sold last fall by Denver entrepreneur J.J. Hendricks, who earlier in 2009 also paid $17,500 for a gold Nintendo World Championships cart.
“I was pretty amazed at the price,” Hendricks told Kotaku. “This Stadium Events auction destroys ..read the full article

The image associated with this post is best viewed using a browser. In the same interview he said the Wii could live for eight more years, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata remarked that if Apple and Nintendo “were in direct competition, I would not use a Mac in my presentations.”
When Dean Takahashi asked about the potential threat of free video games, Iwata responded, “Because of this?” as he pulled out his iPhone.
Talking about the overlap between it and the DSi, he said, “The features of the iPhone and the DSi may overlap. But if we look at our differences, the areas of ..read the full article
